Post Operative care A surgical
procedure has been performed on your feet. Please follow these instructions
to insure proper healing. Feel free to call me with any concerns, questions,
or unusual occurrences. 1. Elevate your feet
with one or two pillows under your calves for the first 3 days. You do not necessarily
need to be in bed. The couch or a recliner chair will do. You may be up for
5 or 10 minutes out of every hour. If your have been given a postoperative shoe
or brace, it is important you wear it when up. You may have a cast and cast instructions. 2.
Apply ice to the foot for the daily but do not allow the dressing to become wet.
Remove the ice at bedtime. You will either have an ice bag or a CryoCuff
ice water boot. The CryoCuff is not meant for walking. 3.
Keep the dressing clean and dry. If it becomes soiled or wet call me. Do
not remove the dressing yourself. Showering with a garbage bag over
the foot does not work well. If it leaks, you are placing yourself in danger
of an infection. Please take sponge baths until directed
otherwise. 4. Take your medication as directed.
Should you feel you are having a bad reaction to the medicines, call me immediately.
DO NOT DRINK BEER OR ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES WITH YOUR
MEDICATIONS. 5. Exercise the foot and ankle
several times a day by rotating the ankle through a full range of motion. Wiggling
the toes is also helpful. 6. Call the office after
surgery and schedule a postoperative appointment if one has not already been scheduled
for you. 7. Observe for the following signs: changes
in color, coldness, numbness, tingling, increased pain, redness, swelling, foul
odor or drainage. IF PRESENT, NOTIFY ME AT ONCE! 8.
Notify me if your temperature is above normal. Please
call me with any additional questions or concerns
